The Five Minute Smile Mock Up: Seeing Your Smile Before Treatment

One of the most valuable skills in advanced cosmetic dentistry is not just being able to prepare teeth beautifully. It is being able to show the patient what you are thinking, before anything irreversible begins.

At Smile Solutions, we often use a quick chairside mock up to give the patient an instant visual idea of where their smile could go. Not a final result. Not a promise. A conversation in 3D.

In a few minutes, we can show whether a non prep ceramic case may be possible, or whether the teeth need to be moved first with orthodontics to create the right position for ceramics later. It also tells us something crucial for the patient in front of us. We can see, instantly and within five minutes, whether a non prep case is actually the correct case for that patient. That is a decision you want to make early, not once treatment is already under way.

We use it at the beginning of treatment planning. We use it during orthodontics. We use it to check whether the teeth are moving into the right place for the smile we are designing.

The patient gets a mirror. They walk around the practice. They look in the bathroom mirror, in daylight, in different lighting, with different lip movements. That moment is powerful. Because suddenly they are not just being told why orthodontics, ceramics, crown lengthening, contouring or whitening may be part of the plan. They can see it.

There is no heavy laboratory bill at this stage. No commitment to a final design. Just a fast, interactive, aesthetic sculpting session at the chairside with material that can be changed, shaped and removed.

We photograph it, remove it, and the patient leaves with a rough visual guide of what we have in mind. They can show their partner, parents, friends or family. More importantly, they understand why certain treatment steps have been recommended.

That creates trust. Not because they have been “sold” treatment. Because they have been shown the thinking behind it.

This is where advanced dentistry becomes communication, consent, planning and artistry all in one five minute moment
