A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers and protects a prepared tooth. Crowns are used when a tooth has lost enough structure that a filling alone may no longer provide predictable strength, function or appearance.

Crowns can be made from different ceramic, porcelain and metal-containing materials. Each has different aesthetic and mechanical properties. The appropriate choice depends on the position of the tooth, bite forces, available space, colour requirements and the condition of the supporting tooth.
For highly visible teeth, ceramic materials can reproduce natural colour and translucency. Posterior teeth may require a material selected with greater emphasis on strength and occlusal loading.

2. Tooth preparation – the tooth is carefully shaped to create the space and form required for the planned crown.
3. Records – digital scans or impressions are taken, together with shade and other information required by the laboratory.
4. Temporary crown – a provisional restoration may protect the prepared tooth while the definitive crown is made.
5. Laboratory stage – the dental technician constructs the restoration according to the dentist’s prescription.
6. Try-in – fit, contacts, colour, shape and bite are assessed.
7. Final placement – once approved, the crown is bonded or cemented according to the material and clinical situation.
8. Maintenance – the crown and supporting tooth are monitored during routine care.
Close communication between the dentist and dental technician is particularly important for complex aesthetic crowns. Accurate records, photography, shade information and a clear understanding of the intended result are central to achieving a restoration that integrates naturally with the surrounding teeth.
A crowned tooth still requires daily brushing and interdental cleaning, particularly around the crown margin. The underlying tooth can still develop decay and the surrounding gums can still become inflamed.
