High level dentistry is expensive for a reason.
And I know you may not like hearing this, but you will never get expensive dentistry at cheap dentistry prices. It simply does not exist.
Dentistry is not fashion. We do not have last season’s crowns sitting in a warehouse that suddenly need to go on sale. So when dentistry is significantly cheaper, there is one question worth asking. Where has the saving been made?
At the top end, you are not simply paying for a crown, a veneer, a filling or an aligner. You are paying for diagnosis, judgement, planning, materials, laboratory support, clinical time, and the experience required to know what should and should not be done.
In my opinion, when dentistry is positioned at the premium end, real experience should sit behind it. At least 15 years post graduation is not an unreasonable expectation when complex, aesthetic or advanced treatment is being carried out.
Because a treatment plan is not a shopping list, and the name of the treatment is not the treatment. The execution is the treatment.
Dentistry is bespoke work carried out by hand, inside a living mouth, using materials that must function biologically, mechanically and aesthetically over time.
After nearly three decades in dentistry, I can tell you exactly where costs can be cut. The dentist. The staff. The laboratory. The materials. The equipment. And the biggest one of all, time.
Every single one of those affects you.
A dentist can choose cheaper on all of those elements. Or they can halve your appointment time and see twice as many patients. Either way, something has changed, and that change does not stay hidden. It shows up in your mouth.
Expensive dentistry does not automatically mean excellent dentistry. But excellent dentistry will never be built on cheap time, cheap materials, cheap technicians and limited experience.
So instead of asking, “Why is this dentist so expensive?” perhaps ask, “Why is this dentistry so cheap?”
Because somewhere, the saving has been made. And ultimately, that saving may just be you.
Cheap dentistry is cheap dentistry. And patients deserve to understand the difference.
