CBCT & 3D Digital Scans

Seeing your teeth in three dimensions

Where traditional X-rays give a flat, two-dimensional image, 3D imaging lets us see your teeth, jaws and surrounding structures from every angle. It is the foundation of accurate, predictable treatment planning for implants, complex restorative work and orthodontics.

What is a CBCT (cone beam) scan?

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) turns X-ray imaging into a detailed three-dimensional picture. A cone-shaped beam rotates around your head, capturing multiple images that are combined into a single 3D reconstruction.

CBCT reveals detail that flat X-rays simply cannot — small fractures, root resorption and fine changes in the bone. It is used for implant planning, surgical planning, root canal therapy, orthodontic assessment and the diagnosis of TMJ disorders. It delivers a lower radiation dose than a conventional medical CT scan, with shorter scan times and the ability to view the anatomy in multiple planes.

CBCT scans are considered safe. As with any imaging, please tell us if you are pregnant or have any concerns about radiation.

What is a dental 3D scan?

A digital 3D scan builds a precise virtual model of your teeth, jaws and bite. A specialised intraoral scanner captures multiple images, and software combines them into a 3D model we can view and work with on screen.

These scans are central to modern dentistry — used for orthodontic and implant planning, surgical planning, TMJ diagnosis, and the design of custom restorations and aligners fitted precisely to your teeth. They offer a level of accuracy that traditional impressions cannot match, and let us show you your own mouth on screen for a far clearer understanding of your treatment.

Digital intraoral scans — no messy impressions

Alongside X-rays, we use digital intraoral scanning to capture a precise 3D image of your teeth and bite, with no impression trays required. These scans support diagnosis, treatment planning, monitoring change over time, and the design of restorations, aligners and appliances with pinpoint accuracy — and they are far more comfortable, particularly if you have a strong gag reflex.

Study models

Study models are accurate replicas of your teeth and bite, created from digital scans or impressions. They let your dentist analyse your bite, plan complex treatment away from the chair, track changes over time and communicate clearly with our laboratory.

Pros and cons of CBCT

Benefits

  • Highly detailed 3D images of teeth, bone and surrounding tissue.
  • Enhanced diagnosis — detects fractures, resorption and internal changes that flat X-rays miss.
  • Precise treatment planning based on accurate measurement and visualisation.
  • Fewer invasive procedures, by pinpointing the location and extent of a problem.
  • Greater comfort — non-invasive and typically complete within minutes.

Points to consider

  • Radiation: low and considered safe, but never used unnecessarily.
  • Cost: CBCT can cost more than a conventional X-ray.
  • Timing: an additional appointment may occasionally be needed.

Common myths about CBCT

  • “CBCT causes cancer.” The dose is low and the risk from a single scan is extremely small; the diagnostic benefit usually outweighs it.
  • “CBCT is always necessary.” Not so — where 2D X-rays are sufficient, we use them.
  • “CBCT is uncomfortable.” It is non-invasive and painless; you simply stay still while the machine captures the images.
  • “CBCT is only for specialists.” General dentists use CBCT routinely for diagnosis and planning.

Who should take extra precautions?

  • Pregnant patients: scans are generally avoided in pregnancy unless necessary.
  • Children: more sensitive to radiation, so exposure is carefully minimised.
  • Certain medical conditions: such as thyroid disease, which may need added precautions.
